4. Why did you choose to take on an apprentice?
We are aware as a business that the average age of butchers in Scotland is continually increasing. Our single biggest asset is our staff and the skills within the business. Its critical for us to train up the next generation or butchers.

5. How did the apprentice develop over the course of their training?
We take on Apprentices of all different ages. Our most recent two recruits have come straight from School and the previous two before that have both had jobs prior to joining.
With the younger staff we see increased confidence, discipline and enjoyment at mastering a skill. We manage their transition from School Leaver to Employee…This usually involves buying them a new alarm clock.

6. What impact has the apprenticeship had on your team or business overall?
With 25-30 ex apprentices on our books at the moment, it speaks for itself. Without them we wouldn’t be able to function as a business.

7. How would you describe the support you received from us as assessors?
See answer to question 9.

8. Were there any standout moments or achievements that come to mind?
The first time an apprentice surprises you with just how much they’ve learnt. Every business will have that crazy busy day when a shop with 10 staff only has 5 turn up. When your back is against the wall and then the apprentice makes sausages unsupervised, answers a phone, gives a customer great service or just steps up.
Also, our apprentices getting multiple nominations for awards is always great recognition for two things. 1) The job we do in training them, 2) The graft and dedication they all put in to achieve the qualification.

9. How would you describe the overall experience of working with us?
Three words…We Love Sarah.
She’s a great influence on all the apprentices, They all comment how she puts them at ease, treats them as individuals, cares about their journey and is a great support. She’s “on it” with every appointment and the feedback she gives to the management team is clear and concise. This enables us to give apprentices a guide/shove/push in the right direction for their next assessment.

10. Would you recommend taking on an apprentice to other employers? Why or why not?
All butchery business’ in Scotland should be taking on apprentices. It’s so important to the future of the trade.

11. Would you recommend our assessment and support services to other businesses?
